Great write-up as always. I've yet to see Far From Heaven but love Todd Haynes, and after spending two whole semesters learning about Sirk's own use of irony in films like All That Heaven Allows, I'm glad to hear it's a quality Haynes kept in his adaptation and look forward to watching it soon even more now!
I've only seen three films by him—All That Heaven Allows, Written on the Wind and Imitation of Life—and loved them all. The latter was where this idea of playing the text against itself rings clearest to me—everything Lana Turner's character says and does is meant to be questioned. ATHA was my favorite though, and I've always imagined it to be about a queer couple lol
Imitation of Life is a blind spot for me and I have to watch it soon! Yeah that interpretation is right there for ATHA, especially considering Rock Hudson’s presence
